4. Barb Cranmer: Culture Shock in Alert Bay

Barb Cranmer (Kwakwaka’wakw) is a member of the ‘Namgis First Nation, British Columbia. Her ancestors have lived, seemingly forever, off the sea and the land in the area of what is now the community of Alert Bay.

From the opening scenes in this episode of Storytellers in Motion, of salmon being prepared and cooked on the beach at Alert Bay, B.C., the importance and love of family and community is evident in Barb Cranmer’s life, as it is in her films.

At the time of shooting this episode of Storytellers in Motion, Barb had taken a break from her production base in Vancouver, having been drawn back to her beloved home and family.
